Basic First Aid features the first aid content distributed across the Rookie, Ranger, and Star awards in the Canadian Swim Patrol program. This 3–4 hour course includes how to contact emergency medical services, rescue breathing, how to treat choking, and care for minor injuries.

  • Recognize when and how to call emergency medical services (EMS)
  • Perform a primary assessment including hazards and ABCs of an unconscious, breathing victim
  • Provide rescue breathing for a victim using a manikin or live candidate
  • Treat and manage an obstructed airway in a conscious victim
  • Provide emergency care for a victim in shock
  • Perform primary assessment and appropriate care for external bleeding
